Panic Disorder Symptoms are sudden, intense and come with intense feelings of anxiety. Most of the symptoms attack unexpectedly and although they do not pose a real threat to our lives, the actual terror one endures whilst in the midst of an attack is quite severe. To see if you actually have a panic disorder check the following Panic Disorder Symptoms.
These symptoms and their classifications are taken from the Diagnostic Criteria from the DSM – IV
Panic Attacks – A Panic attack is a discrete period of intense fear or discomfort, in which four or more of the following symptoms developed abruptly and reached a peak within 10 minutes:
1. Palpitations, pounding heart, or accelerated heart rate.
2. Sweating
3. Trembling or shaking
4. Sensations of shortness of breath or smothering
5. Feelings of choking
6. Chest pain or discomfort
7. Nausea pain or discomfort
8. Feeling dizzy, unsteady, lightheaded or faint
9. Derealization ( feelings of unreality ) or depersonalization ( being detached from oneself )
10. Fear of losing control or going crazy
11. Fear of dying
12. Parenthesis ( numbness or tingling sensations )
Now please understand there is a difference between a panic attack and a panic disorder. If you have experienced a combination of 4 or more of the above symptoms in one instance that lasted in the region of about 10 minutes, you probably had a panic attack. You may have convinced yourself given the physical symptoms that it was a heart attack. Now a panic attack is a terrifying experience however, when it develops into a full blown disorder that can be a major problem.

Panic Disorder Symptoms Without Agoraphobia
If you have noticed the following Panic Disorder Symptoms:
1. Recurrent unexpected Panic Attacks
2. At least one of the attacks has been followed by 1 month ( or more ) of the following:
2.1 Persistent concern about having additional attacks.
2.2 Worry about the implications of the attack or its consequences ( e.g. losing control, having a heart attack, “going crazy” )
2.3 A significant change in behavior related to the attacks
3. Absence of Agoraphobia
4. The Panic Attacks are not due to the direct physiological effects of substance ( drugs or medication ) or a general medical condition
5. The Panic Attacks are not better accounted for by another mental disorder, such as Social Phobia ( e.g. occurring on exposure to feared social situations )
Should you be experiencing the above Panic Disorder Symptoms, then it may be only a matter of time before you develop Agoraphobia. Agoraphobia is basically the mindset of avoiding people, places and situations that may or may not set of or trigger a Panic Attack. In essence the patient turns into a hermit that lives in absolute terror of this silent, invisible demon from attacking them unexpectedly. If your Panic Disorder Symptoms have reached this stage then it’s of utmost importance you put an immediate curb to your disorder.
